Though an area that has been out of the radar for a long time is documentation of material and hazardous material in fixed assets. A regulation well implemented within the maritime industry since 2009.
The Maritime industry must conform with the international regulations within the UN where all assets must be documented including all included materials. The purpose of this regulation is to protect the maritime environment if a ship sinks or it’s time for the ship recycling process.
Plastics, Rubber, Asbestos, Oil, Aluminum or Heavy Metal doesn’t matter. All material must be registered where it is located and the amount.
An important aspect of this material is how a material can affect us in the environment we live in when a plant or facility is to be refurbished, there is an accidental fire or the facility is demolished.
There are always worries if there is an incident about what material there is in the machinery or assets.

An example: A circuit board is based on fiber epoxy used in both professional as private consumer goods. The electrical conductive material is normally made out of copper. In a special environment the circuit board is made from Teflon, managing high frequencies or high temperature, polyamide or Aluminum for flexible support or Brass for heating distribution. Master of Life Cycle Management or LTO
Long Term Operation, LTO, covering equipment’s life span including how the environment it operates in affects the life span. An important aspect is the equipment life span is not longer than the material inside the equipment.
The machinery life span is no longer than its pressure instrument material it consists of. The same type of equipment in different environment will have different life spans due to ageing mechanism of a specific material.
